SAKAGURA DOJO

SAKAGURA DOJO is an artist-run dojo, gallery, studio, and community hub in the Japanese countryside. Once a sake brewery, it has been restored and reimagined as a place to gather, create, and practice — a living space where history, creativity, and community converge. The property combines a traditional Japanese house built from salvaged materials and a factory space still carrying the spirit of its past life.

Here, practice can take many forms: art, design, music, dance, cookery, writing, martial arts — or simply being present. We don’t define what practice is. Instead, we seek to expand its meaning, allowing it to shift and grow with each person who enters.

Our community is not bound by a fixed manifesto. It is a continuous making of a manifesto, reshaped through the ideas, needs, and contributions of its members. In this way, SAKAGURA DOJO becomes a place of ongoing exchange — where thoughts, feelings, and creativity are shared freely, and where something new is always emerging.

We are building more than a space. We are cultivating a community — open, evolving, and welcoming to all.

Paths yet walked

At SAKAGURA DOJO, we are creating a space where art, community, and practice converge. Our artist-in-residence program invites creators from around the world to gather, experiment, and learn — blending artistic practice with local culture and traditional Japanese martial arts. Here, you can take lessons in Kendo, Judo, and more, explore new ways of making art, and connect with our vibrant community.

Our gallery space allows for exhibitions and shows, offering artists a platform to present their work while interacting with visitors and locals alike.

We are also embracing the tradition of sake making. In collaboration with the finest brewery in Okayama, we are crafting our own Nihonshu, which will be available soon. Updates will follow as the process unfolds.

SAKAGURA DOJO hosts local events where residents and visitors can gather, learn, and share experiences — from creative workshops to cultural exchanges.

Above all, we are open to new ideas. We welcome anyone with curiosity, creativity, or a desire to explore, and we invite you to join us in shaping a space that evolves with its community.

SAKAGURA DOJO SAKE

At SAKAGURA DOJO, we are crafting three exceptional types of Nihonshu (Japanese sake) in collaboration with one of the finest breweries in Okayama. REI, our Junmai Daiginjō, offers a refined and elegant flavor with a delicate aroma and smooth balance. MAKOTO, the Junmai Ginjō, delivers a pure and approachable profile, with clean, subtle notes that reflect meticulous care in every batch. JIN, a special Junmai that is unfiltered, unpasteurized, and undiluted, presents a bold, full-bodied taste preserving depth, complexity, and freshness.

These sakes embody craftsmanship and attention to detail at every stage, offering a distinctive tasting experience. They will soon be available in the USA, bringing the best of Okayama’s sake tradition to your table.
